The aim of the review was to ensure new developments:
・were consistent with agreed philosophies arid concepts;
・enhanced public areas and achieved outstanding strategies such as pedestrian access;
・optimised existing facilities;
・were innovative; and
・were able to optimise finiancial returns to the Authority/the State of NSW/private investors.
A new plan was prepared to progressively complete the redevelopment of Darling Harbour by the year 2000. A program was adopted comprising a short, medium and long term development program, together with ongoing programs for:
・improving existing facilities;
・improving access;
・improving the open space; and
・improving the water areas.
The timing of the Master Plan review was fortuitou 5 as its completion co-incided with then decision to grant Sydney the Year 2000 Olympics. Darling Harbour will be a major Olympic venue with seven sports being based at the Convention and Exhibition Centre and time Entertainment Centres While the Authority had already set itself a completion date of Year 2000, there is now a compelling force to ensure this target is reached.
Program to Complete
Since 1994, the following private sector projects have been negotiated and approved:
・Imax Theatre
A 540 seit, $ 18 million, giant screen, high definition movie theatre which opened in September 1996
・Durling Walk/Sega World
Darling Walk will he a $20 million ground level development, comprising themed restaurants, shops and performing arts space; the major sub-tenant on an upper level will be Sega World, a $60 million high-tech interactive family orientated theme park.
Darling Walk/Sega World is scheduled for completion in February 1997.
・Sydney Aquarium
Development consent has been granted for a $5 million extensive to the very suceessful Sydney Aquarium. The extension will provide a major new exhibition area, and educational and laboratory facilities. Construction will start in January 1997 with completion early 1998.
